Westchester Lawyer Magazine

Our *digital* Westchester Lawyer Magazine is published monthly. To view issues of the Magazine, please see our archive below.

Westchester Lawyer Magazine features articles written by WCBA members on various legal topics, recent changes in court rules and procedures, and includes columns from WCBA Board/Committee Members, such as The Practice Page, Member Spotlight, and From The Back Bench. We also provide CLE/program information and photos/recaps of Association events (i.e., Annual Meeting and Past Presidents Dinner, Golf Outing, Annual Banquet, Mock Trial, Meet the Judges, etc.).

Article Submission Instructions
We appreciate your interest in writing an article for Westchester Lawyer, the Westchester County Bar Association’s monthly magazine. We welcome submissions from current WCBA members and law school students (it is a requisite). The WCBA magazine encourages article submissions on topics of interest to members of the Association.

Please send all article materials and communications via email, with attachments as needed, to Roni Brumberger at editor@wcbany.org.
Articles must be well written, readable and interesting to broad categories of membership. Since this is a magazine, not a scholarly legal journal, we appreciate a more relaxed writing style with a limited number of endnotes. We look especially for articles on topics that are timely, newsworthy and describe important developments in areas of the law or support for the legal profession. We suggest you review articles published in the Magazine in the six months prior to your submission to ensure that you are not duplicating information already presented.

Helpful Suggestions for the Content and Organization of your Article
Provide practical, unbiased information. Avoid long narratives and sensational language.
Limit discussion of personal experiences or cases. Refer to a personal experience or case only if it helps explain a legal concept or provides a good example of what's discussed in the article. Don't discuss the size of monetary judgments or settlements that you helped obtain.
Do not just promote yourself. Keep the discussion to the issues at hand. The article should be informative on its own, not a sales pitch for your firm or organization. Your expertise, if applicable, should become evident through the informative nature of the article.
Write a good first paragraph. The first paragraph should state what the article is about and offer a conclusion (when appropriate).
Keep paragraphs short. When possible, use subject headings to break up paragraphs, and use bulleted lists when including a list of items or issues.
DO NOT USE ALL CAPS for emphasis. Use bold or italic sparingly.

Word Count and Deadline for Submission of Final Article
The deadline for submission of a final article is six weeks prior to the agreed upon publication date. E.g. Sept. 15 for the November issue of the Magazine. You can submit a finished article at any time and we will schedule as space permits.

The final article should be between 1000-1200 words and we prefer an original article that has not been published elsewhere. If a reprint, the author is responsible for acquiring reprint permission prior to submission of the article.

Book reviews, when considered for publication, are evaluated for objectivity, impartiality, and originality. If your piece is time-sensitive please note that in your submission.

Please Provide your Headshot and Bio
• High resolution JPEG portrait to be included with your article.
• Professional bio of no more than 40 words, with contact information included.

Citations
Authors are responsible for the accuracy and format presentation of related citations. In general, follow the Bluebook. Official cites are required, and authors are responsible for accuracy of all quoted material. Notes should be of reasonable length, i.e., not overly long, but with enough information to back up sufficiently points made in the article. Avoid the extensive use of notes that might be more appropriate for a law review format. Do not place case citations in the body of the text. Notation style is endnote format, not footnote. Place periods and commas before endnote numbers and quotation marks.

Copyright Information
Submission of material to the WCBA for inclusion in the Magazine, Bar Journal, website or other WCBA publication grants the WCBA limited copyright and full permission to reprint the material in any WCBA publication, on the WCBA website, or with LexisNexis or Westlaw at any time without additional consent.
