Westchester County Bar Association Lawyer Referral Service (LRS)
The Westchester County Bar Association cannot provide legal advice and does not offer any legal services.
Please fill out the Online Referral Form HERE.
The Westchester County Bar Association's Lawyer Referral Service is happy to assist you in finding a lawyer. Our service refers clients to licensed and experienced attorneys who have registered to receive referrals in specific areas of law and who are in good standing with the New York State Appellate Division. The Lawyer referral service also maintains a resource page with listed agencies that provide free or low-cost legal services throughout Westchester and New York State. Walk-ins are not accepted at the WCBA office. Attorneys are not present at this location. The Westchester County Bar Association cannot provide legal advice.
Notice: The Lawyer Referral is a Westchester County Bar Association service offered to the public that connects attorneys registered to the program to the members of the public seeking to hire a PAID attorney. The service does not act as a law firm, provide legal advice, or represent clients in any capacity.
I can afford an attorney, but how do I hire or find one? How does the Lawyer Referral Service work?
Please complete the Online Referral Form and select the area of law for which you seek legal advisement. If you do complete the form and do not receive a result that may mean the WCBA Lawyer Referral Service does not have any participating attorneys in your area of legal need.
After receiving and processing the form, you will receive an attorney's name and contact information. From there, you can arrange (up to) a 30-minute consultation, which will cost $40. It is a non-refundable referral fee to book a consultation with the attorney. After the meeting, you are not obligated to hire an attorney with whom you speak or pay for additional counsel. However, should you require further assistance, you and the attorney will mutually agree upon the cost.
What if I can't afford an attorney? How can I get referred to a free attorney?
If you need legal assistance but cannot afford to hire a paid attorney, please refer to our resource page.
Notice: Many listed agencies have limited and restricted income/government grants that may limit their service offerings to specific demographics, legal matters, and geographic areas. Please get in touch with the agency directly for more information on their service offerings and eligibility requirements.
How do I get assigned to a free attorney?
The WCBA does not "assign" counsel or attorneys. Only the judges and the court's overseeing cases can appoint an assigned counsel or attorney to an individual unable to afford legal representation. This can vary based on the courthouse and case type. We encourage all individuals with an open case seeking an appointed attorney through the courts to reach out to a court clerk for more information on the process to request or give the court notice of the need for a court-appointed attorney.
