Hardship Policy

WCBA members may apply for a discount or scholarship to attend a program, based on financial hardship. Under this policy, any WCBA member who has a legitimate financial hardship may apply in writing for one of three options in lieu of full tuition payment.

Information For CLE Organizers, Section & Committee Chairs, and Presenters

Q]  What is an "experienced attorney"?
A]  Attorneys who have been admitted to the New York Bar for more than two years are considered experienced attorneys.
 
Q]  As an experienced attorney, what is my CLE requirement?
A]  Experienced attorneys must complete a total of 24 accredited CLE credit hours during each biennial reporting cycle (the two-year period between your attorney registrations). At least 4 of these 24 credit hours must be in the Ethics and Professionalism category, and at least 1 from the remaining 20 credit hours must be in the Diversity, Inclusion and Elimination of Bias category. The remaining 19 credit hours may be in any category of credit.

*You may choose to complete the Cybersecurity credit in Cybersecurity General or Cybersecurity Ethics (or a combination of the two: ½ credit in Cybersecurity General and ½ credit in Cybersecurity Ethics).
 
Q]  What is a "newly admitted attorney"?
A]  Attorneys admitted to the New York State Bar two years or less are considered newly admitted attorneys.

Q]  What if I was practicing law in another jurisdiction before I was admitted to the New York Bar?
A]  If you were practicing law in another state, the District of Columbia, any territory of the United States or any foreign jurisdiction, for at least five of the seven years immediately preceding admission to the New York Bar, you will not be deemed newly admitted for the purposes of CLE, and you must comply with the CLE requirement for experienced attorneys.

Q]  As a newly admitted attorney, what is my CLE requirement?
A]  Newly admitted attorneys must complete at least 16 transitional CLE credit hours in each of the first two years of admission to the Bar, as follows:

Cybersecurity, Privacy and Data Protection ("Cybersecurity") Category
You must complete at least 1 credit in Cybersecurity as part of the 32-credit requirement.
You may choose to complete the Cybersecurity credit:
  • in Year 1 or Year 2 (as part of the 16 credit-requirement for that year)
  • in Cybersecurity General or Cybersecurity Ethics (or a combination of the two)
You may apply a maximum of 3 credit hours of Cybersecurity Ethics - but not Cybersecurity General - toward your 6-credit Ethics and Professionalism requirement
 
The first set of 16 transitional CLE credit hours must be completed by the first anniversary of admission to the Bar, in the designated categories of credit. The second set of 16 transitional CLE credit hours must be completed between the first and second anniversaries.
