Pro Bono Special Committee
ABA Model Rule EC 2-25 states:
"A lawyer has an obligation to render public interest and pro bono legal service. A lawyer may fulfill this responsibility by providing professional services at no fee or at a reduced fee to individuals of limited financial means or to public service or charitable groups or organizations, or by participation in programs and organizations specifically designed to increase the availability of legal services. In addition, lawyers or law firms are encouraged to supplement this responsibility through the financial and other support of organizations that provide legal services to persons of limited means."
In that spirit, the Pro Bono Committee is charged with the duty to facilitate providing legal services to those who are unable to afford them. We work closely with many of the legal service providers in the County as well as the NYSBA Pro Bono office.
For 2008, the Committee is excited to move forward in pro bono endeavors and hopes to foster interest and participation among members of the Westchester Bar Association. This year we are teaming with the WCBA Real Property Committee and Westchester Residential Opportunities, Inc., a non-profit organization that counsels people on predatory mortgages and correcting or negotiating potential mortgage problems. Volunteers will work with Westchester Residential Opportunities, Inc. counselors and provide legal interpretation and caution language on good faith estimates, title costs, HUD-1’s, closing statements, and standard mortgage practices. In light of the current foreclosure crisis, we hope to do our part in minimizing this epidemic. If you are interested and can volunteer for perhaps an hour or two a month or if you'd like to join this Committee or offer pro bono services, contact Donna Drumm, Esq. at firstname.lastname@example.org.
