Judiciary Committee

The Committee on the Judiciary reviews the qualifications of those judges and attorneys-at-law who, by their character, temperament, professional aptitude and experiences, have demonstrated special qualifications for judicial office. The Committee adopts and publishes its own rules, subject to review by the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors of the Association. Please be advised that membership in this Committee is by appointment by the WCBA President.

The Committee meets regularly prior to each annual election to interview candidates who have completed an extensive questionnaire.  The records of the Grievance Committee of the Ninth Judicial Circuit and, where appropriate, the New York State Commission of Judicial Conduct, are reviewed for pending complaints.  Recommendations submitted by the candidates also are investigated by the Committee.

Complaints against judges or court personnel are also considered by the Committee.

Once the selection process is complete, including secondary interviews if requested, the results are published.

An additional task of the Committee is to reach out to the judiciary selection committees of other bar associations, in an ongoing effort to refine our selection process and make the procedures as fair and convenient as possible.
